The Shining Bird

The Shining Bird

WOLLONGONG SHOW ONLY

Shining Bird is an experimental pop band from the coastal town of Austinmer, NSW Australia. Originally formed as a studio project in 2012, they released the Shade of the Sea EP, followed by their debut album ‘Leisure Coast’ on Spunk Records in 2013. The album received widespread acclaim for its unique brand of Australiana-infused dream pop. On the back of strong reviews from publications such as Rolling Stone, Russh and the Sydney Morning Herald, as well as earning Album of the Week on ABC’s Radio National, ‘Leisure Coast’ helped propel Shining Bird towards a new bunch of listeners.

After touring extensively in their own right, Shining Bird has played alongside acts such as Kurt Vile, Franz Ferdinand, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Drones, Father John Misty, and appeared at numerous festivals including Fairgrounds, Secret Garden, Sydney Festival, Melbourne Music Week and Newtown Festival. The band’s live shows earned them a finalist nomination for ‘Best Live Act’ in FBi’s Sydney Music, Art & Culture Awards in 2014.

For the past year the band have been making regular trips to the Blue Mountains of NSW to write and record new material. Trekking to remote lookouts and watching classic Australian films fueled the creative process. After much anticipation by fans, the band emerged with ‘Rivermouth’, a track steeped in Australian bush and coastal imagery, that reflects a maturity of songwriting and production. The track is filled with layers of detail that offer a different journey on every listen

ANNOUNCE TWO INTIMATE GIGS FOR LATE MAY

WITH SPECIAL GUESTS SHINING BIRD (WOLL) & LEAH FLANAGAN (CAN)

Iconic Australian rock band Midnight Oil today announced two intimate gigs for late May. These will be the Oils' only Australian concerts for 2019 apart from their headlining appearance at the world’s most remote music festival, The Big Red.

Appropriately for a band who are longtime advocates for First Nations peoples, the Canberra show will take place on Reconciliation Day, which is a public holiday in the ACT.

“Meaningful steps towards reconciliation are long overdue, including a whole of government response to the Uluru Declaration, so it will be good to be in Canberra on this important date to kick up a fuss and help get the issue back on track,” said the band’s frontman, Peter Garrett.

Special guests for the Wollongong show will be local experimental pop band Shining Bird, while acclaimed Darwin singer-songwriter Leah Flanagan will open proceedings in Canberra.

Immediately following these gigs, the Oils will head to Europe for headline concerts in cities including London, Manchester, Dublin and Paris, as well as major festivals in France, Switzerland and Germany, before returning home for The Big Red Bash.

In other big news the Oils have also confirmed rumours that they hope to track some new music for possible release in 2020. If all goes to plan these would be their first recordings since 2001. At this stage it is not known whether a new song or two will be previewed at some point during their tour, but the band currently plans to head straight into the studio when they come off the road.

Oils drummer Rob Hirst said,

“We’ve been talking about recording again for years but The Great Circle Tour in 2017 was such a positive experience that it made us even hungrier to get back to making new music together. It’s a bit early to know what might come out of it yet - we’re just looking forward to getting back into that creative mode.”

Strict anti-scalping measures will be in place for both dates. As always, fans are strongly advised to avoid using search engines like Google to find tickets as they steer buyers to unscrupulous and expensive overseas resellers. Instead fans should avoid getting ripped off by simply clicking the links to the official ticket agencies.
