Midnight Oil

Midnight Oil announced today that they will stage new concerts in three Australian cities where they had to cancel gigs at very short notice earlier this year – Darwin, Cairns and Canberra. With a varying line up on each show, these new dates and the existing Swan Valley show feature a swathe of talented special guests – Busby Marou, Emily Wurramara (solo), Goanna, King Stingray, Leah Flanagan, Moaning Lisa and Stephen Pigram.

Following their interrupted, but acclaimed, Australian dates in support of their latest ARIA #1 album, the band took Resist: The Final Tour across North America throughout June for a memorable series of shows. They are currently playing the tour’s European leg which includes iconic venues like London’s Roundhouse and an already sold-out performance at the famous Olympia in Paris.

As recently announced, this closing leg of the “Resist” tour will also include two special festival appearances in remote and regional Australia; The Mundi Mundi Bash near Broken Hill and a reprise of the legendary “Stompem Ground” in Broome (see info below).

Finally, back in March the Oils had to blow out an environmental benefit gig at The Palais Theatre, Melbourne, when drummer Rob Hirst contracted COVID. Plans are in the works to make up for that cancelled Melbourne show, and to add something similar in Midnight Oil’s hometown of Sydney to wrap up their final tour. These newly announced Resist: The Final Tour shows will kick off at Munro Martin Parklands, Cairns with special guest Busby Marou on Thursday 25 August, across to Darwin Convention Centre with special guest Leah Flanagan on Saturday 27 August before a final stop at Fellows Oval - ANU Campus, Canberra with special guests King Stingray, Emily Wurramara (solo) and Moaning Lisa on Saturday 1 October.

BUSBY MAROU

​BUSBY MAROU are Rockhampton duo Thomas Busby and Jeremy Marou. Their meaningful lyrics, melodic guitar riffs and delightful harmonies have seen them win over fans and critics alike and they have gained the reputation as one of Australia’s hardest-working live bands, best known for their distinctly Australian storytelling and gifted musicianship. Their success includes four ARIA-charting albums. Their 2010 self-titled album is certified gold, while their most recent albums The Great Divide and Farewell Fitzroy debuted in the Top 5, and Postcards From The Shell House was Busby Marou’s first ARIA Number 1 album. They have been nominated for multiple ARIA awards, have won 4 APRA awards, as well as The Triffid’s “Queensland Album of the Year” award, multiple Queensland Music Awards and 2010’s Deadly Award for “Most Promising New Talent”. EMILY WURRAMARA (SOLO)

​EMILY WURRAMARA originates from Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory and is an AIR award-winning, six-time Queensland Music Award winner and ARIA-nominated artist. In 2018 Emily released an 11-track album Milyakburra, educating and informing in both English and Anindilyakwa languages. The critically acclaimed album features the emotive Lady Blue and Black Smoke. Emily has performed on many global stages and has toured and played with iconic artists including Archie Roach, Mavis Staples, John Farnham, Missy Higgins, Jessica Mauboy, John Butler and more. Described as “one of music’s most inspiring Indigenous role models”, Emily recently released ‘Ayarra Emeba (Calm Songs)’ EP.

GOANNA
​Appearing at: Nikola Estate, Perth (Sunday 25 September) – a day on the green
​In the 1980s, GOANNA’s debut album, Spirit of Place, helped forge a new Australian identity. The iconic Solid Rock stoked a fire for Indigenous rights that hasn’t gone out, while the anthemic Let The Franklin Flow was a call to arms for Australia’s emerging environmental movement. Goanna released three studio albums: 1982’s Spirit of Place, 1985’s Oceania and 1998’s Spirit Returns. Soulful, lyrical, political, humane and brimming with musicality, originality and creative volatility, Australia has never produced a group like Goanna, before or since. In 2022, forty years after their debut album, Shane Howard, Rose Bygrave, Marcia Howard and Graham Davidge, with special guests, are reliving those treasures, as they embark on Celebrating 40 Years Of Spirit Of Place – a year of paying homage to the Goanna spirit again.

KING STINGRAY
​Appearing at: Fellows Oval - ANU Campus, Canberra (Saturday 1 October)
​Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (vocals), Roy Kellaway (guitarist), Dimathaya Burarrwanga (guitarist), Campbell Messer (bass) and Lewis Stiles (drums) make up the Australian indie, pop-rock band KING STINGRAY. Hailing from the small town of Yirrkala (NT), the band perform in both English and Yolŋu Matha – the traditional language of the indigenous people of northeast Arnhem Land in northern Australia – and describe their sound as ‘Yolŋu surf rock.’ King Stingray released their debut single Hey Wanhaka in 2020 before taking out the title of triple j Unearthed Artist of the Year in 2021. Their follow up singles Get Me Out (2021) and Milkumana (2021) made waves in the local music scene when they charted in the 2021 triple j Hottest 100 taking out places #46 and #56 respectively. The band recently released ‘Let’s Go’ and a sublime version of Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ for triple j’s Like A Version.

LEAH FLANAGAN
​Appearing at: Convention Centre, Darwin (Saturday 27 August)
​Originating from Darwin, Leah Flanagan grew up in a household filled with music and culture – boasting a proud Italian, Indigenous (Alyawarre) and Irish heritage that she credits as early influences to her sound. Flanagan’s latest album ‘Colour By Number’ is out now through her own Darwin based, Indigenous owned and operated label Small Change Records. The album features the singles ‘Aralia’, ‘Starlight’ and the self-titled track ‘Colour By Number’.

MOANING LISA
​Appearing at: Fellows Oval - ANU Campus, Canberra (Saturday 1 October)
​Moaning Lisa is composed of Charlie Versegi (singer/guitarist), Hayley Manwaring (singer/bassist) Ellen Chan (lead guitarist) and Hayden Fritzlaff (drummer). Renowned for creating an atmosphere entirely of their own, the band deftly combines a garage rock, grunge fantasy with ‘one massive, cosy, accepting love-fest’ (Rush On Rock). It is this live prowess which has landed them support slots for DZ Deathrays, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Mitski as well as slots at some of the country's most prestigious festival such as; Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival, Yours and Owls and Kennedy’s Creek Festival. Singles include ‘Inadequacy’, ‘Carrie (I Want A Girl)’, ‘Good’ and ‘Something’.

STEPHEN PIGRAM
​Appearing at: Nikola Estate, Perth (Sunday 25 September) – a day on the green
​From the pearling town of Broome in the south-west Kimberley region of Western Australia, home of the Gularrabulu nation, Yawuru-Jugun jabi wamba, singer/songwriter/musician Stephen Pigram is probably best known for his work with six of his siblings in the Pigram Brothers (1997-2017) band. He was also a member of the seminal 1980’s Broome bands Kuckles and Scrap Metal and was musical director and co-writer of Jimmy Chi’s "Bran Nue Dae" (1990) and “Corrugation Road” (1997). Stephen now steps out solo armed with his guitar, ukulele & harmonica performing songs from his two solo CD releases – Wanderer (2013) and Solfish (2021), as well as local cult classics.

In the wake of last week’s acclaimed Tasmanian gigs, Midnight Oil today unveiled the full line up for each show of their imminent mainland tour. The dates will feature a broad palate of Australian sounds, from buzzing pub punks Amyl & The Sniffers through the young surf rock of Darwin’s King Stingray to the mighty Hoodoo Gurus just as they launch their new album. Acclaimed singer-songwriters Jack River, William Crighton, Emily Wurramara, Stephen Pigram and Busby Marou will also appear as will Best Blues & Roots ARIA winners, All Our Exes Live In Texas. Plus the tour will feature a handful of rare reunion appearances by fellow 1980s trailblazers Goanna.

These shows kick off with sold-out gigs in Newcastle and Wollongong, shortly after the band’s new album Resist is released on 18 February. When announcing the dates last November the Oils revealed that this would be their last concert tour and that it would hopefully be followed by some other shows overseas – this remains their intention providing international travel is possible. AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS

Melbourne band AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS are Amy Taylor (vocals), Dec Martens (guitar), Gus Romer (bass) and Bryce Wilson (drums). The Sniffers wrote, recorded and uploaded their first EP, Giddy Up, in the space of 12 hours and followed with the Big Attraction EP (2017), which featured iconic tracks I’m Not A Loser, Westgate and Mole (Sniff Sniff). With a grab bag of influences, from Australian rock to rap to ’70s punk, the band emerged with a sound that was totally their own – short, fast, loud and funny – which is embodied in their debut self-titled album (2019). Amyl and The Sniffers included the singles Some Mutts (Can’t Be Muzzled), Got You and Monsoon Rock, which was playlisted on BBC Radio 1. The album was nominated for the Australian Music Prize and ultimately won an ARIA Award for Best Rock Album. Their sophomore album Comfort To Me (2021) was written over a long year of lockdowns and met with overwhelming critical acclaim and debuted at Number 2 in the ARIA Album Charts, Number 21 in the UK Album Charts, Number 2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and Number 18 on the Billboard Album Sales Chart. HOODOO GURUS

HOODOO GURUS are Dave Faulkner (vocals, guitars), Brad Shepherd (vocals, guitars), Rick Grossman (vocals, bass) and Nik Reith (drums). Celebrating their 40th anniversary, HOODOO GURUS boast 9 ARIA Top 20 albums, 9 ARIA Top 40 singles, a host of multi-platinum albums and an induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame. They hold a singular place in Australian and international rock ‘n’ roll history. The band were unrepentant garage rockers whose colourful personality and pop culture smarts took them to the top of the charts at home and to the forefront of international garage/alternative/power pop movements of the mid-’80s with classics including What’s My Scene, Like Wow – Wipeout, Bittersweet, Come Anytime, Miss Freelove ’69, My Girl and 1000 Miles Away. Their hotly-anticipated new studio album Chariot of the Gods is out on March 11 and the band kick off their 40th Anniversary Tour in April. 

JACK RIVER 
Appearing at: Entertainment Centre, Adelaide (Wednesday 30 March) and Stage 88, Canberra (Tuesday 19 April) 
 
JACK RIVER is the stage name of Holly Rankin, a Sydney based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and leapt on to the Australian music scene in 2016 with the release of her first single Talk Like That that served as a prelude for her debut EP Highway Songs #2. Two more singles followed, including Fault Line (2017) and Ballroom (2018), which helped propel the alt-rock electro-pop rockstar onto the Australian music scene shortly before the release of her three-time ARIA-nominated debut album, Sugar Mountain (2018), which peaked at Number 11 on the ARIA Albums Chart. At the 2018 ARIA Awards Sugar Mountain was nominated for Breakthrough Artist, Best Pop Release and Engineer of the Year.  Most recently, Jack River released We Are The Youth (September 2021), a song dedicated to the billions of young people driving urgent political and social change. 

KING STINGRAY 
Appearing at: Convention Centre, Cairns (Wednesday 6 April) and Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney (Thursday 21 April)

STEPHEN PIGRAM

STEPHEN PIGRAM, a Yawuru singer/songwriter from Broome, is well known for his work with his musical brothers in the much-loved Pigram Brothers band. Stephen was also an important early pioneer of Aboriginal rock as a member of the influential ’80s bands Kuckles and Scrap Metal, and was musical director for the original production of the first Aboriginal musical – Jimmy Chi’s Bran Nue Dae. Stephen also produced (with brother Alan) and scored (with Alan and Alex Lloyd) the feature film Mad Bastards, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011. Now stepping out solo – armed with his guitar, ukulele, harmonica and stompbox – Stephen released Solfish in late 2021, a follow-up to his debut solo album, Wanderer. 

WILLIAM CRIGHTON 
Appearing at: Entertainment Centre, Newcastle (Wednesday 23 February) and WIN Entertainment Centre (Wednesday 2 March)  
 
Born in the Wiradjuri Nation (Dubbo, NSW), WILLIAM CRIGHTON grew up in the Riverina area of rural NSW where he developed his deep connection to country. Crighton is a passionate environmentalist both in action and his music, as demonstrated through his debut self-titled album William Crighton (2016), which attracted critical acclaim with a nomination at the 2017 AIR Awards and was praised by Rolling Stone calling it ‘uniquely penetrating storytelling.’ His follow up album Empire (2018) takes the same tune as a traditional Australian bush ballad that entwines tales of love for the land and people. His highly anticipated third album Water and Dust (2022) was written in collaboration with his wife Julieanne and features some incredible musicians including long-time friends and collaborators Matt Sherrod & William Barton, Midnight Oil’s Rob Hirst & Jim Mogine, Jeff Lang, James Haselwood & Luke Davison. Water and Dust is scheduled for release on 11 February 2022 on vinyl, CD and streaming platforms.

In 2017 Midnight Oil returned from a long hiatus with a sweat drenched pub gig at the legendary Sydney venue, Selinas. In the middle of that special set, frontman Peter Garrett borrowed some famous lines, exhorting “rage, rage, against the dying of the light”. And that’s exactly what they’ve done ever since. They sold out 77 shows in 16 countries on their epic “Great Circle” tour. They toured Europe again, did a memorable gig in the outback, then returned to the studio for the first time in over 18 years and recorded 20 new songs. The first batch of that material, The Makarrata Project, debuted at #1 on the same weekend that longtime bass player Bones Hillman sadly died. Despite that profound blow, and a global pandemic, the band and their First Nations Collaborators still mounted their acclaimed “Makarrata Live” shows early this year – championing the Uluru Statement and highlighting ongoing injustices suffered by First Nations people.   

Today Midnight Oil announced that this chapter of their career will come to a memorable close next year with the release of the other 12 new songs they recorded with Bones and a series of big gigs. Both are aptly titled Resist. 

The band also announced that this will be their final concert tour while making it clear that this does not mean the end of the Oils. Each of the members will continue their own projects over the years ahead. They remain very open to recording new music together in future and supporting causes in which they believe but this will be their last tour.    

Meanwhile Resist will be a fitting, forward looking, statement for a band whose clarion call has always been “it’s better to die on your feet than live on your knees”. The tour will see them performing classic Midnight Oil songs from across their repertoire while also showcasing some urgent new works. As the title makes abundantly clear, Resist engages with the issues of today and tomorrow – like the lead single “Rising Seas” which tackles the climate crisis in typically uncompromising fashion.

Rob Hirst says: “If I look back, I see a blur of familiar names and faces: Jim, Pete, Martin, Bear and me, slamming loud prog-pop in a Chatswood garage; Giffo, magnificent, rocking back and forth at his first Royal Antler gig; Bonesy, headphones on, singing, lounging on the deck learning our catalogue.  

I see our managers in their offices - Gary, Zev and John; our tour managers in their cars and buses - Constance, Neil, and Willie Mac; our producers in their studios, Keith, Lez, Glyn, Nick and Warne; and our crew on countless stages, Michael, Oysters, Ozzy, Doc, Nick, Jock, Gerry - and so many more.

I see our wives and trusted friends, and the tiny faces of the 'Baby Oils’, watching us from side of stage, from Sydney to Sao Paulo to Saskatoon.   

But mostly, blinded by stage lights, I see the first two rows of a thousand gigs: Midnight Oil fans, pumping, jumping, singing louder than the band.

Peter Garrett says: “We all know time refuses to stand still for anyone but after many years together the band’s spirit is deep, the music and words are strong, and our ideas and actions as bold as we can make them. We’ve reached people in ways we never could have imagined. Our desire to create and speak out is undimmed. We hope everyone who hears this album and gets to one of the shows will come away charged up about the planet’s future, saying ‘why stop now?'.  Having always tackled every tour like it's the last - this time it actually will be.” 

Jim Moginie says “We’ve played intensely physical gigs since our humble beginnings back in 1977 and we never want to take even the slightest risk of compromising that.  A lot has happened over the last five years. Much has been achieved and with the passing of Bones much has been lost, so it now feels like we’re at the end of a cycle.  

These will be sad and beautiful gigs but luckily we’re still capable of blowing the roof off any stage and that’s what we intend to do. You could call this a farewell tour, but Midnight Oil will still continue in some form or other as we’re brothers, family. We stand as one, dependent on each other and grateful in all the important ways that make great bands great.”

Resist will be Midnight Oil’s 15th studio release since the band exploded out of the post-punk scene back in 1978, blazing a singular trail of blistering gigs through Australia’s pubs and clubs. In the four decades since they have created an unparalleled string of classic tracks including “I Don’t Wanna Be The One”, “Power & The Passion”, “US Forces”, “Best Of Both Worlds”, “The Dead Heart”, “Blue Sky Mine”, “Forgotten Years”, “Truganini”, “Redneck Wonderland”, “Say Your Prayers” and the 2020 APRA song of the year “Gadigal Land (feat. Dan Sultan, Joel Davison, Kaleena Briggs & Bunna Lawrie)”. Their  Diesel & Dust LP topped the critics’ “100 Best Australian Albums Of All Time” and its worldwide hit “Beds Are Burning” is one of the “500 Songs That Shaped Rock’n’roll” according to the U.S. Rock’n’roll Hall Of Fame. The band’s performance of that song at the Sydney Olympics is etched in the memory of billions.

Midnight Oil calls for governments to urgently take serious actions that reduce carbon pollution. This tour will embrace best practices for emission reductions and offsetting. A portion of proceeds will be set aside for organizations seeking to elevate the existential threat posed by the climate crisis.
