Australia’s new wunderkind of electronic music Anatole (Jonathan Baker) will join Majical Cloudz for their Sydney show next Monday. His acclaimed second EP Surrounds (out now via TEEF Records) features contributions from former Sydney Conservatorium classmates on strings, piano and clarinet and vocals from Melbourne songstresses Rosebud Leach and Tash Parker alongside his own trumpet and laptop creations. The final result is a collection of sophisticated and lush sounds that are unlike anything else - listen to ‘Colours’ here

Joining Majical Cloudz at The Toff is Melbourne local Sui Zhen (solo). Best known for her pop-electronic jam ‘Take It All Back’, Sui will provide the perfect accompaniment to Majical Cloudz sound. Citing Japanese lover rock, 80s electro-bossanova and dubby-lounge pop as the genre’s that influence her the most, her distinctive approach to making music sets her apart from other pop electronic acts releasing music at the moment. Sui Zhen also provides vocals and percussion to widely known Melbourne 8-piece band NO ZU.

SYDNEY & MELBOURNE HEADLINE SHOWS ANNOUNCED FOR FEBRUARY 2016

with special guests Anatole (Sydney show)
& Sui Zhen [solo] (Melbourne show)

Canadian minimalistic pop duo, Majical Cloudz have been turning mainstream media and international tastemaker’s heads since the 2013 release of sophomore album Impersonator. Following its release, Devon Welsh in collaboration with Matthew Otto were soon nominated for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize, receiving a review of 8.2 on Pitchfork, and a mountain of critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, Stereogum, VICE, NME, Pitchfork, The Line of Best Fit and more.

‘Impersonator gently twists your arm like this, song-by-song and note-by-note, and it is as discomfiting as it is transcendent’  8.2/10 Pitchfork

‘It’s a fascinating record that begs softly for closer inspection and possibly even adoration’ – The Line of Best Fit

Recently released, Majical Cloudz highly anticipated third album Are You Alone? (Matador Records/Remote Control Records) already has critics claiming it is a stunning expansive ode to Impersonator, pushing their sonic pallet in adventurous new directions. Are You Alone? even scored Majical Cloudz Spin Magazine’s album of the week, while Pitchfork wrote a massive cover story in the lead up to the album’s release.

‘As its title suggests, is an incredibly personal experience, one that benefits from conversing with Welsh as much as he is with you’ – Consequence of Sound

‘Stark, ethereal instrumentals buoyed by Welsh's unflinching voice’  8/10 Pitchfork

Featuring a string of moving singles like ‘Silver Car Crash’, ‘Are You Alone?’ & ‘Downtown’ these songs provoke feelings of melancholia and introspection, through their simple production and emotional lyrics, each translating beautifully in a live setting. Last year, Majical Cloudz provided the perfect opening for Lorde on her North American tour. The performances left Lorde claiming Majical Cloudz to be “one of the most simple and moving things I have seen, ever.”

‘An inimitable presence in a simple t-shirt, black jeans and tennis sneakers, he drove each vowel forcefully home as producer Matthew Otto filled the room with swells of heavily sedated sound’ – Ones To Watch

‘It’s atmospheric, dramatic, introspective music that also happens to be accessible’ – Aesthetic Magazine

‘The deeply personal lyrics and the soothing beat personify what is so great about them’ – Live in Limbo

A deeply moving performance not to be missed, secure your tickets to a conceptual, live performance that is sure to be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
