The Dingoes - New album!

THE DINGOES - TRACKS New album and Tour announced.

Last August 2009, The Dingoes were rightfully instated into the ARIA Hall Of Fame much to the joy of their peers and their fans.

Messrs John Bois, Broderick Smith, Chris Stockley and Kerryn Tolhurst gathered together on stage for the first time in 30 years to accept the accolade on behalf of themselves and the much missed John Lee who was - and still is - very much with them in spirit.

As a result, fires were rekindled and the creative juices set flowing again and the four gathered at Kerryn Tolhurst's studio in Tucson, Arizona early in 2010 to see how it felt to play together again. It felt and sounded good. The consequence is a brand new album from The Dingoes titled 'Tracks' and featuring ten new ones. 'Tracks' is being released through the Liberation music label in Australia on Friday August 6th.

To coincide with the release of the album, band members will travel far and wide - and some not quite so - to travel the tracks of Australia. The Dingoes will perform some of their earlier songs and will be introducing their new songs to their fans in Australia.

The band will be joined on stage by Ash Davies (drums), Chris Copping (ex Procul Harum on keys) and Kevin Bennett (from The Flood on vocals & guitar) adding to the already amazing caliber gathered on stage and ensuring a very special live music event for all in attendance. There will also be special guest supports for all shows.

The Dingoes - Tracks album available through the Liberation Music label and will be in stores on Friday August 6th. For tour and ticket info: www.thedingoes.com.au

Sound Relief tally tips over $9 million with addition of live DVD sales

One year on from the phenomenal award winning Sound Relief concerts an additional sum of $1,046,496.24 has been raised through sales of the deluxe 4 DVD set recording of the concerts, with more to come!

This additional sum takes the grand total of funds generated by Sound Relief from the twin concert events and DVD sales to an impressive $9,080,672.24,

The initial sum raised by the concerts went straight to the Bushfire Appeal for distribution by the Victorian Government to people and communities affected.

The $1 million plus sum raised from the DVD sales will go directly to Red Cross to develop programs and resources to better prepare communities for disasters such as bushfires and floods.

Michael Gudinski's Liberation Music released the 4 DVD set on October 9, 2009.

"I'm delighted that the one year anniversary of the Sound Relief concerts has coincided with the DVD set raising more than $1 million. It's a fantastic addition to the money already raised," Michael Gudinski said.

"As with the concerts themselves, the release of the DVD set was due to the generosity and support of the music industry on all levels - the artists and their management, their labels and publishers, retail, media, suppliers and so many others. Their cooperation and commitment has ensured as much money as possible was raised. It is truly impressive to see everyone unite once again to produce such a significant result for such a worthy cause."

The CEO of Red Cross, Robert Tickner, welcomed the donation.

"This money is very much needed. It will support our crucial everyday work preparing Australian communities for future disasters, whether they be floods, cyclones or bushfires."

In recognition of the devastating disasters from which Sound Relief was born and to commemorate the anniversary of the Sound Relief concerts and all that they stood for - a day of music, entertainment, reflection, celebration and surprises - two of the live audio recordings from Sound Relief will be made available to air on radio for one weekend only.

The two tracks that will be played are the Hunters & Collectors' "Holy Grail" and Bliss N Eso's "The Sea Is Rising" - unquestionably both stand out performances at Sound Relief.

It is with much sadness that we heard the news about The Knack's front man; Doug Fieger who passed away at his home in LA today.

We were thrilled to have Doug join us on our last Countdown Spectacular tour in 2007. He was a great performer and a true gentlemen who luckily for us was at that time enjoying a brief remission from cancer.

It was fantastic to see Doug get up and perform The Knack's huge chart topping hit of the 80's to thrilled audiences right across Australia. All singing along to 'M M M My Sharona'. We would like to salute Doug for his courage and bravery throughout his battle with ill health.

On behalf of us all at The Frontier Touring Company and the cast and crew of The Countdown Spectacular 2 tour of 2007, we would like to pass on our deepest condolences to Doug's manager; Jake and to all of his family and friends. In tribute to Doug, here is the vision of him performing 'My Sharona' in Australia in August 2007.

RIP Doug Fieger 1952 - 2010.

The Temper Trap at The Corner Hotel: Review

The Temper Trap

December 29, 2009

The Corner Hotel

Hitting Australian shores for the first time in nearly nine months, the Liberation Golden Children and Prodigies of Australian Pop-Rock The Temper Trap played an exclusive and intimate show as a warm up for their upcoming summer of Australian Festivals. A sold out and jammed packed Corner Hotel was the perfect venue for this and gave the crowd a sense of being part of the set and getting up close and personal to the band that has more than the potential to be the hottest band in the country.

Walking on stage to a unanimous applause and several screams of excitement, the band casually ripped into an upbeat instrumental that revved the crowd up an extra notch. The first impression of the band is that they are confident in their ability and they look like they belong on centre stage and for this reason they really go hard and give it their all. Fader was played very early in the set and it was at this point you knew the show had really started and it became apparent to see why the band had sold out several famous venues across the UK and Europe in the past months and received so much hype on UK Radio One and publications such as the NME.

The band evenly spread fan favourites Love Lost and Sweet Disposition across their set with the later receiving an eruption of cheers as soon as the opening cords were played. Singer Dougie's Voice may have seemed a little coarse at times and to his own admission, however this did not affect the quality or atmosphere of the show in any way. The regular set ended with the Drum Song which left fans wanting more and after a couple minutes of the entire crowd chanting for the band to come back, they did not disappoint and treated the crowd to a new song and then finished the night off with the ever popular Science of Fear.

After seeing this band live for the first time and getting a first hand account of their talent it is not hard to see why they have received so many awards and award nominations. For anyone attending Big Day Out it is a necessity that you add this band to the list of bands you are planning on seeing and if you want the true Temper Trap experience (Which I highly recommend and that will not disappoint) you can check them out at The Forum in Melbourne next Tuesday (12th).

- From a keen fan

James Reyne sings The King!

Moshroom stumbled across the news today that legendary rocker James Reyne will be releasing a new album of Elvis covers in April 2010. Sounds interesting, we thought, and did some more investigating and found these words about the project from the man himself.

"For years I've held a kind of fanciful curiosity about Elvis Presley.

Not just that I've long thought he was an extraordinarily under-rated singer, who, as such, had sometimes been over-looked as a bit frivolous and run of the alley; who had instinctively recorded some of the most groundbreaking, influential and exciting music ever, when there was no rule-book, and NOBODY had come before quite like that, and who had wrung a career that was mighty and sad and brilliant and unhinged and transcendent and grandiose and corpulent and forsaken; but I've been fascinated by the myth and the peculiarly American culture that had conceived and nurtured the phenomenon that he became, and, in turn, the culture that he helped create, however unwittingly.

I've known Charles Fisher a little bit for a long time. We first met, I think, when he was producing the D.D. Smash album "The Optimist" a way back then. Anyway, not long ago I was meeting with Charles and the talk turned to Elvis, and how we both realised what a killer singer he really was, and that whole debate about whether he was still as good after he came out of the army, and that not only had he given some of the greatest popular vocal performances ever, and made some fantastic material even better, that he had certainly elevated some lowly refrains and later, after he seemed not to care too much, or his lifestyle choices got in the way of his judgement, had offered up some pretty somnolent, heavy-lidded renditions of some pretty torpid gear, but infusing them with something so charismatic and engrossing that they were made kind of essential listening anyway.

I wondered whether we could have the AUDACITY, PRESUMPTION and DAMN GALL to try and record an album of my versions of some Elvis songs. We made a LONG list. I researched and rediscovered a lot of the songs that I already knew and a lot that I didn't. From our LONG list we chose fourteen songs. It was not easy. My main criterion was that the originals had that certain, innate insouciance that grabbed you immediately and, therefore, might translate more easily. We both had some perennials we wanted to include - "Kentucky Rain" for example; a song that runs a fine line between mawkish, soupy, sentimental cornpone straight off the cob, and bloody good song-writing. We wanted to pay respect to the fabulous simplicity of these tunes, where the feel of the song was king, the sentiment was uncluttered and direct and the tongue was often sitting cannily in the cheek. "Viva Las Vegas" is almost a standard in this vein. As are "Such A Night", "Bossa Nova Baby", "Girls, Girls, Girls" and "Little Egypt", while "She's Not You" and "Good Luck Charm" swing crazy as a loon, man. I was also mindful of the fact that there are several of Elvis' tunes it would be pure tomfoolery to attempt; songs with a spirit so singular and original as to be virtually impossible to interpret: "That's Alright, Mama" anyone? "Wooden Heart"? "Jailhouse Rock".

The main aim was to try and make the songs my own, always aware of the stupidity of trying to imitate Elvis himself and the folly of even pretending to contend the brilliance of the originals, but keeping a sense of humour intact and still remaining true to any crucial rhythms or cadence or musical elements that existed on those first, seminal, exhilarating recordings. It is probably testament to the artful simplicity of these originals that our recording process was painless and, dare I say, easy.

Fortune smiled on us as well when it came time to mix the album. Charles happened to be friends with the charming, Grammy-winning, mix engineer from Los Angeles, Helik Hadar. Helik has worked extensively with acts as diverse as Herbie Hancock (for whom he won the Grammy), Joni Mitchell and Walter Becker, to Rufus Wainwright and Teddy Thompson. Nothing was a problem for Helik. He arrived for a month's work, delighted us with his skill and taste, and fell in love with the country, it's carefree attitude, the air, it's light and, I figure, the girls, girls, girls.

Whatever the case and whatever the cost, I hope I've done some justice to these tunes I've tagged; a smithereen of the music of an actual legend who, for those who've seen the famous shot of him being bussed on either cheek by two girls, is right there with you while he ain't there at all.

Have you heard the news? There's good rockin' tonight!"

James Reyne.

The Mess Hall have been a favourite around the Frontier office for a while now. Hailing from Sydney these boys have built a solid reputation for explosive live performances, killer hooks and undeniably awesome videos.

Their latest single 'Bell' is no exception. Already a favourite on triple j, 'Bell' is The Mess Hall's lead single from their highly anticiapted third album, and a mind-blowing return from the band. As soon as we saw the video we knew we had to share it with y'all.Enjoy!

Around a Record in a Decade - or two

All musicians, credible ones at least, can recognize a distinction between inspiration and originality. They would have to otherwise they'd have no choice but to pursue a career under the banner of something like GABBA or Dread Zeppelin. You can see many who have tried and fail to be 'inspired' by their inspiration, straying too close to the elements that define the original.

People like Elly Jackson from La Roux have been able to extend the metaphorical logic of the sounds they have previously heard, to introduce unexpected ideas and build a parallel story of their own. Clearly influenced by all things 80's culture, La Roux's presence both physically and audibly is simultaneously familiar yet conceptually unknown. I'll admit I was initially sceptic of La Roux as I generally am with most electropop but the layering in their production, lyrically and structurally is impressive. The fact that you get struck by the song writing on practically every track is a rarity in this genre by itself.

Perhaps one of the reasons they've had such a large amount of success is because they understand the importance of identity and association. With a generation that thrives on two minute attention spans it isn't enough for musicians to simply have an amazing voice. Drama and appeal, to the point of exaggeration, needs to be part of their sound, videos and appearance in order for the MTV masses to really sit up and take notice. This seems obvious and well known, in fact Lady Gaga often talks about 'art' being the main purpose of her entire life, and yet no one has quite done this whilst also paying homage to a different era.

But tipping their hat or quiff in this case, to another time doesn't mean La Roux are out of touch with their own. Jackson's voice is without a doubt futuristic which is potentially how La Roux balance out their synth heavy melodies. The duo doesn't channel success through retro-nostalgia-culture but they are channelling their sound through stylistic filters of the past. Ironically this has resulted in their inspiring originality.

In a generation of indie rockers and pop princesses, Cobra Starship fit in quite nicely. This year especially, artists of today's party realm have strived to keep up with the ever-changing loves and loathes of their teenager audience.

As we know, the materialistic Gen Y's rule the sales of pop music CDs and concert tickets, demonstrating an importance for up and coming music sensations; to create an image in reflection of what sells. Cobra Starship, in my eyes, has successfully achieved this. Songs like "Pete Wentz Is the Only Reason We're Famous" and "I May Be Rude But I'm The Truth" demonstrate the edgy and audacious sound that today's teens are looking for, whilst maintaining their own individual spark.

Making their debut in October 2006 and previously touring with Panic! At The Disco, 2009 has clearly been the year for them. With their party attitude and cheeky lyrics, the five member band is a stand out act to their Australian fans. They peaked on the Billboard charts at #7 with "Good Girls Go Bad" featuring Leighton Meester showing the world teens have gone crazy over them.

Lucky for us fans, Cobra Starship are set to perform 7 shows on their first Australian and New Zealand Tour starting on March 12 2010 with the help of Frontier.

Get excited, the Starship is coming.
